Nokia may not be selling anymore Lumia devices, but it’s still connecting people across the globe. Nokia announced today that it’s buying Alcatel-Lucent for $16.6 billion in shares to better position itself against its rivals like Samsung, Ericsson and Huawei.

The buyout will allow it to build on 5G infrastructure and cut research and development costs. The merger is set to close in the first half of next year.
